Assembling Mirror Frame Kits

Mirrors come in two forms, the preassembled and the mirror frame kits. Both of these methods of installing a mirror in the home have their benefits and their downsides. When handling a preassembled mirror kit, the entire thing is placed in a box and the only thing left to do is to hammer a nail into the wall and hang the mirror. This does not sound as though there are any negatives here, but when one looks closer they begin to see those cracks in the mirror. If the mirror is damaged previous to hanging the mirror, it can be very difficult to remove the mirror from the preassembled frame. These frames were not designed to come part easily. In addition, it may be difficult to purchase a mirror that would then fit into the frame. In addition, most preassembled mirror frames and mirrors cost more money than the mirror frame kit varieties.

The mirror frame kit is frequently less expensive but not necessarily a less valuable or lower quality than the preassembled mirror frames and mirrors. The mirror kit costs less because it requires the individual to finish the assembly and at times, the finishing of the wood. This makes the project more personal for the individual and less costly for the manufacturer. This makes it more affordable for people who would otherwise not have access to a high quality mirror. In addition to being a lower cost, the mirror frame kits often include mirror glass that is of a more common cut and size. This can make it easier to replace the mirror if it is broken.

When assembling a mirror frame kit, it is important to use the materials given for the task. Do not attempt to replace the nails with a heavier or lighter gauge nail. The nails provided in the kit are the appropriate size for the weight of the frame and the wood. If a heavier nail is used, the wood may split from the pressure caused by the nail. If a lighter gauge is used, the nail may not be able to hold the frame together with the additional weight of the mirror glass. If using wood glue to further secure the frame, be sure to avoid getting it on the back of the frame or along the groves that mirror will be place in. Any extra glue should be wiped off before it dries or sanded off once the glue sets.
